Planting This Summer’s Rooftop Vegetable Garden

Thursday, May 15, 2014 2 0

Our rooftop vegetable garden is flourishing! Mostly. The broccoli seeds won’t sprout and I had to replant the lettuce because its pot drowned after a week straight of rain… but other than that, it’s thriving!

I’m very late posting these photos of our garden set up – I can’t believe this was

Our garden is on our apartment’s rooftop patio and we have filled it with tons and tons of pots and filled those pots with tons and tons of vegetables. Last year was the roof garden’s first year and we had success with tomatoes and lettuce. So this year, it only made sense to fill it with more vegetables!

We planted peas, lettuce, kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, beets, and carrots (with tomatoes still to come). We’ve filled our lower patio near the kitchen with herbs for cooking – basil, dill, oregano, parsley, chives, rosemary, and thyme.

The peas were A’s favourite seed to plant – the seeds are so big and easy to handle!

Since I took these photos, mostly everything has sprouted – except for the broccoli seeds, which remain a fail! I’m going to try and replant them again, although it may be getting a little late in the season now. Anyone have any tips on growing broccoli in pots?

Also – you know you’re getting old / nearing 30 when you get excited about gardening. Seriously. Every day I go up to the garden to check on all the little seedlings. Grow little plants, grow!

All you need are a few pots to get started! Planting herbs in a window box is a great easy first step too. All my gardening has been by trial and error – I’ve had the most success with lettuce and peas and cherry tomatoes so far. It is just so rewarding eating veggies you’ve grown yourself! Good luck :)
