Watermelon Margarita recipe - a refreshing summery drink

My favourite movie of all time is Dirty Dancing. Since the first time I watched it, as a pre-teen, when my parents rented the movie on VHS and excitedly gestured for me to come watch the final dance scene, I have been obsessed. I used to wish that our family would vacation at a camp like Kellerman’s in the Catskills, I’d dream about meeting a hunky guy who would literally sweep me off my feet, I wished my hair was curly and perfectly blowing in the breeze like Baby’s, and I wanted to wear her high-waisted white jeans and crop tops and floaty skirts.

I still know every single word to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, and every time I watch Dirty Dancing, I am immensely happy. And Patrick Swayze, well, he is just hot.

You know that scene where Baby carries a watermelon into the staff party and everyone is dirty dancing and all sweaty and she’s standing there in conservative dress with a giant watermelon in her hands, all nervous and innocent? {Watch here if you have no idea what I’m talking about.} Yeah, that’s when she meets Johnny and where it all begins.

And today we’re making watermelon margaritas. Because nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Watermelon Margarita recipe - an unexpected and refreshing summer cocktail.

I decided to juice the watermelon with my juicer and serve my watermelon margarita on the rocks – you could instead throw everything into a blender and add a little ice for a blended margarita. The watermelon adds a pretty pink hue and a little extra sweetness, so I’ve decreased the amount of simple syrup from my Classic Lime Margarita recipe.

These are a great refreshing cocktail, so I highly recommend mixing yourself up a couple and getting out your old Dirty Dancing DVD. Sounds like a good time to me ;)

Happy FriYAY!

  1. ice cubes
  2. 4 ounces white tequila
  3. 4 ounces watermelon juice (I put my watermelon through my juicer)
  4. 1 ounce freshly squeezed or bottled lime juice
  5. 1 ounce simple syrup (or more to taste)
  6. 1 ounce orange liqueur, such as Cointreau (I love using Grand Marnier too!)
  7. coarse salt to rim the glass
  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add tequila, watermelon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and orange liqueur. Shake until well mixed.
  2. Crack some coarse salt onto a small plate. Rim the edge of your glass with lime juice, then press the rim into the coarse salt to rim the edge.
  3. Strain margarita mix into your glass and serve with ice and a wedge of fresh watermelon.
  1. I used my juicer to make watermelon juice. If you don't have a juicer, you could instead throw the watermelon into a blender - or while you're at it, just make the whole drink in a blender and add some ice for a blended watermelon margarita!
  2. To make simple syrup: put 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook until sugar dissolves. Cool. Store in refrigerator for up to one month for the next time you make margaritas ;)
