Curried Sweet Potato and Lentil Soup

SOUP. I could eat it every day for both lunch and dinner – and I often DO eat soup for lunch every day at work, but never for dinner because J doesn’t think soup constitutes enough of a meal. (I’m working on that one, trust me!)

This soup has all kinds of good-for-you veggies in it: sweet potato, carrots, and red lentils.

Wait a sec, lentils are actually part of a category called “pulses.” (I just learned about pulses the other day because Pulses are now the food trend of the year. Seriously.) Pulses are lentils, beans and chickpeas – they are high in protein and fibre and low in cost! Seriously, trade in pulses for meat a couple of nights a week for a significant slash on your grocery bill.

Podcasts for {Food} Bloggers

A list of my favourite podcasts for food bloggers, bloggers, food lovers, and creative entrepreneurs. What are your favs? | the lovely kitchen

Podcasts are having their heyday right now – it seems like everyone and their dog is starting a podcast and I love it! I listen to podcasts in the car, instead of turning on the radio, while I’m getting ready in the morning, at the gym, and at work (when I’m not doing something that requires me to be super focused). It’s such a great way to be exposed to new ideas and learn a lot! There are so many podcasts targeted to food bloggers (and for bloggers and food lovers separately!) These are my favourites.

African Sweet Potato Peanut Soup {vegan}

You know when you’re at the hair salon and they’re shampooing your hair and they give you a scalp massage and you feel like your brain is melting?

Well, I was at the salon a couple weeks ago and I got thinking about what a real full-body massage would be like. Have you ever had a real full-body massage? I hadn’t. I know. So I looked up a nearby reputable massage studio and booked one pronto.

Let me tell you – I don’t understand why I’d waited 29 years to have a massage. They are amazing. AMAZING. I left feeling like jelly – the best, most wobbly, melted jelly in the whole entire world. And now I’m hooked. A version of this African Sweet Potato Peanut Soup was posted on my massage studio’s blog a while ago – out of a cookbook from a vegetarian restaurant in my hometown, Victoria, BC.

Farmhouse Potato Leek Soup

Thursday, October 16, 2014 0 0

This Potato Leek Soup has been keeping me warm for many winters! I started making it in 2009 when I was living in Montreal and facing my first ominous, snow-up-to-my-waist, don’t-leave-the-house, -40 Celcius wind-chill winter. Luckily my little studio apartment was a block away from the neighbourhood corner grocery store, and I was able to march through the snow, wearing my much-hated snow boots, with my jacket zipped up to my ears, to buy the few ingredients needed for this soup.
