Apple Pie Bites are made with slices of apples rolled up in homemade pastry sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. A great recipe for entertaining!

Apple pie bites! What is more cute than that?! Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts. Especially for a holiday celebration like Thanksgiving. Forget the pumpkin pie, I’m all about the apple pie! And mini apple pies?! Even better!

My mom was the one who pointed me to the idea of apple pie roll-ups (hi Mom!) I’m still so proud of her whenever she finds recipes on the internet, so when she linked me through to the Blonde Chef’s recipe for Apple Pie Bites, and then baked them the next day, I knew I had to create my own variation.

Podcasts are having their heyday right now – it seems like everyone and their dog is starting a podcast and I love it! I listen to podcasts in the car, instead of turning on the radio, while I’m getting ready in the morning, at the gym, and at work (when I’m not doing something that requires me to be super focused). It’s such a great way to be exposed to new ideas and learn a lot! There are so many podcasts targeted to food bloggers (and for bloggers and food lovers separately!) These are my favourites. 


Homemade Hot Apple Cider

Every Fall, it’s on my list to go apple picking in an apple orchard. Living in the city, that means we need to travel out to the suburbs to find a farm, so it’s not the easiest thing to do on a whim. Every Fall I get excited about the prospect of apple picking, and every year, by the time I get my act together, we’ve missed apple season.

This year, I was determined not to miss apple season. I researched a few farms and decided on one that wasn’t too far away and picked a sunny Saturday to make the drive. We arrived at the farm, saw the apple trees in the distance, and walked over to the farmer to say hello. Hilariously, the farmer told us that their farm produced no apples this year! Something about their bees and nothing got pollinated. (This is actually not hilarious, and is rather worrisome – we’ve been watching documentaries about the vanishing of the bees.)


Balsamic Beet Crostini

One of the vegetables that absolutely flourishes in our garden are beets. They’re perfect for our mild northwest climate, and they grow wonderfully in containers. Every year, we plant at least three containers of beets, in staggered timing so they don’t end up ripening all together. (But inevitably, there ends up being a time – and that time is now – when we feel overwhelmed with beets!)

Beets and goat cheese are a match made in heaven. There’s a reason why if you google beet and goat cheese salad, you’ll return 36,793 results. I thought I’d put this classic combination on crostini (fancy name for toasted baguette slices) and drizzle it with even more deliciousness – balsamic reduction – to create a Balsamic Beet Crostini. Thyme adds the flavour of Fall, making this a wonderful and simple appetizer to serve at an autumn dinner party.

It’s official! is now!

It’s a subtle change – especially since I’ve been calling this blog “The Lovely Kitchen” for a while now – but changing over the domain was the last step to making the new title official. Unfortunately the site was down for the day yesterday, so sorry if you visited then! Now I’m back with a vengeance! (And don’t worry, all bookmarks and pins are set up to re-direct to the new domain, so there will be no broken links.)

Simple Roasted Beet Salad

Happy Labour Day! I am just loving this three-day weekend – if only all weekends could be this way! The weekend has been a perfect mix of errands and fun and blogging and delicious food. Last night, J and I made our first roast chicken of the season (eeek, is it Fall already?!) and with it, sipped one of our favourite local red wines (Orofino Red Bridge Red) – it was heavenly. One day I will post our roast chicken recipe, but before I get too caught up thinking about the delicious food that went into my belly last night…
